Freeze-Dried Pet Food Options

Freeze dried dog food is gaining popularity, but why and what exactly is it?

When most people hear the term “freeze dried,” they immediately think of astronaut food. The process of creating freeze dried dog food is not a far cry from the creation of astronaut ice cream! The freeze-drying machine quickly freezes fresh dog food, then creates a vacuum to draw out any moisture from the food. This process creates an incredibly shelf stable food while preserving the nutritional value.  

Freeze dried food has several benefits. In addition to the prolonged shelf life, freeze dried foods tend to be more nutritionally bioavailable. Traditional kibbles undergo high heat processing that can degrade the proteins and make them less digestible. Bacteria and microorganisms cannot exist without the presence of moisture. Since freeze dried foods have all the water content removed during the freeze-drying process, they are much safer to feed out when compared to frozen raw foods.
